Carotid artery pseudoaneurysm following dialysis line insertion - fatal but an avoidable complication – A case report

Abstract
Background:
Carotid artery pseudoaneurysm due to accidental arterial puncture during internal jugular vein line insertion is a fatal as well as an avoidable complication if done in a proper way.
Case Presentation:
We report a case of right carotid artery pseudoaneurysm following right internal jugular vein cannulation. A 43-year gentleman, chronic kidney disease stage 5, on maintenance hemodialysis, developed a pulsatile swelling of the neck six days after a Central venous catheter placement in the right internal jugular vein, which was later diagnosed to be a pseudoaneurysm of the right common carotid artery. Surgical repair of the pseudoaneurysm was done.
Conclusions:
Arterial complications are unavoidable however good the technique of central line insertion might be. However , a correct technique along with ultrasound guidance may reduce the incidence of arterial injury and its fatal complications during central line placement.
