Surgical management of Chondrosarcoma Rib

Poulomi Mahapatra, Yamuna Prasad Meena, Vinay Naithani.

Abstract
Introduction:
Chondrosarcoma of a rib is a very rare malignant tumor of the bone. Most patients present with an enlarging, painful anterior chest wall tumor. CT scan with intravenous contrast is the gold standard for radiological imaging and planning for surgery. Since chondrosarcoma is less sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, surgical treatment with extensive resection with a sufficient margin is considered first line treatment. Overall survival is excellent in most surgical series from experienced centres.
Case Report:
A 37-year-old male patient presented in our outpatient department with gradually increasing swelling over left, mammary region of chest. Radiograph showed bony outgrowth on the anterolateral aspect at 4-5th rib. Surgical management done via anterolateral thoracotomy. Wide surgical resection along with chest wall repair by suturing mesh along with reinforced pectoral muscle flap was done. He was discharged with uneventful postoperative course on 10th postoperative day
Conclusion:
Radical Surgical resection of chondrosarcoma chest wall with a sufficient margin of clearance along with chest wall repair is an effective management in these patients.

Key words: chondrosarcoma, rib, thoracotomy, radical resection, CT scan
