Abstract
Introduction: The involution and development of breast, though a physiological process, gives rise to various breast problems ranging from simple mastalgia to full blown cancers. Diseases like fibroadenoma, breast abscess and also cancers require surgical intervention, and add to the rising financial burden on our healthcare system. Hence, the aim of this study was to understand the pattern of breast diseases requiring surgical intervention in a teaching hospital in Central India.
Materials and method: In this retrospective study, records of all patients undergoing breast surgery from the period December 2016 to November 2018 where analysed and age, sex, laterality, diagnosis and type of surgery performed were noted.
Result: A total of 107 females underwent surgery, out of which 68 (63.55%) were operated for fibroadenoma, followed by breast carcinoma (17.75%), abscess (12.15%), sebaceous cyst (4.67%), Phylloides tumor (0.93%) and duct ectasia (0.93%). Age of the patients ranged from 14 years to 50 years with commonest age group of presentation being 21 to 30 years. 52 (48.59%) lesions were right-sided, 46 (43%) left-sided and 9 were bilateral.
Conclusion: We Indians are no different from the rest of the world when it comes to data comparison of various diseases, but we lag behind in overall numbers. An alarming sign is the early age at which breast cancer is affecting our women, and we as a society should take definitive steps to halt this trend.

Key words: Benign breast diseases, breast cancer, fibroadenoma, breast abscess, sebaceous cyst
